Suggest An Alternative Medication For Zomig Prescribed For Migraine Headaches

I am in my early 70s and have had migraine headaches for years although they are not nearly as severe as they were when I was younger. I have been taking Zomig (Zomigtriptan) for years. Now my insurance company has removed it from their formulary and will no longer pay for it. What would you suggest to taken in its place? The insurance company has suggested sumatriptan (Imitrex) which I have taken in the past and did not work well for me. They also suggested naratriptan HCL and Rizatriptan. I want something I can take at any time during the headache. I generally wake up with the headache or after eating or smelling something that trips it.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

All medications you mentioned are Triptans the same class as Zomig. I would reference Naratriptan. Among these alternatives are lifestyle changes such as getting regular exercise or take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
