Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. My 84 years old mother has been taking atravastatin for years. With all the side effects is there a homeopathic medication she could take instead? Of course I’ll call her regular doctor for final recommendation. She does have severe memory loss and kidney problems mainly. Thank you much for your help!
Confusion and memory issues can occur in some persons with statins but can also occur due to repeated small insignificant strokes that can occur in persons with high cholesterol.
There are other causes of dementia as well. There are herbal options to control cholesterol such as red yeast which is available in some health stores, it contains a statin as well however and the person should still have blood tests at least yearly.
A diet full of fiber from fruits and vegetables as well as grains would help to reduce her cholesterol as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
