Suggest An Alternative Of Fluocinonide To Treat Itchy Red Rashes On The Legs

This is a left leg problem and I have red splotches of varying sizes beginning at the ankle and then further up on the leg. I have been applying Gold Bond anti-itch on the areas after my bath at night, so I have no itching problem. There is no pain involved, nor does the affected areas become wet or weepy. About two years ago, my dermatoligist prescribed something called Fluocinonide or something close to that. The three weeks on and three weeks off did not seem to make any difference. Is there possibly a better method of treating this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Asymptomatic red spots on lower legs seem to be most likely due to capillaritis or Schamberg's purpura, more so because they are persisting for about 2 years. The cause is blood leakage into skin from capillaries. The red cells break and release hemoglobin which gets converted to hemosiderin, responsible for the reddish brown pigmentation of Schamberg's disease. The condition is quite harmless and sometimes regresses on its own though it is usually persistent. I suggest you to take an oral Calcium Dobesilate supplement for a few weeks. In addition I suggest you to apply Betamethasone Valerate cream or Mometasone Furoate cream. These are all prescription medications and I advice you to kindly talk to your local practitioner for a prescription of the same.

Regards.
