Suggest An Effective Treatment Than Muscle Relaxers

I have been shunted since 2009 . I was suspected of having NPH and spinal taps gave me brief improvement. Now I am still having extreme difficulty with walking. My neurologist tried muscle relaxers but it did not help. I can only walk very short distances.NO ONE seems to be able to help me. I am only 66 and go to PT 2x s a week. Have serious balance issues, also. Drs. don t believe it is MS or parkinson s. Any ideas ??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The gait abnormalities can be part of NPH however other possibilities like cerebellar ataxia, or Parkinson's may be kept in possibilities. It's better to get a second opinion from another neurologist and get whole neurological examination done as well as repeat Scans like MRI may be needed to compare with previous scans for any signs of ventricles showing increase in size as well as any other changes in cerebellum. MS seems less likely but possibility of Parkinson's should be ruled out clinically based on any tremor or rigidity on examination. You may also need to be tested for metabolic or nutritional causes like sugar and thyroid profile as well as B12, folic acid and D3 levels and replacements if needed. Treatment should be accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
