Suggest Appropriate Forms Of Keppra For NG Tube-fed Patient?

What is the most appropriate form of Keppra for NG Tube-fed patient, currently taking 500mg regular (not XR) tablet twice daily by crushing and water dissolving? Any particular harm/side effect as generally warned, not to chew, crush, or even split? How to observe over-dose more accurately? Some said blood test for its level check-up shows nothing informative? Thank you

Hello,

Since this drug very important to the patient and you can not stop it abruptly nor change it to some other anti-epileptic drug.

For regular tablets, you can crush them and mix it with some juice or water. However, extended-release tablets can not be crushed or chewed because all the medicine will be delivered at once and it can cause side effects and ineffectiveness.

You can also use Keppra in the liquid formulation as well as per availability in your area.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr SAMEEN BIN NAEEM, General & Family Physician
