Suggest Cause And Remedy For Numbness In The Thumb

I was cutting some thick fabric today for a few hours and I eventually lost feeling in my right thumb (the thumb used when operating scissors) and its been several hours and my thumb is still numb. Will this go away on its own? At what point should I have someone look at it?
