Suggest Diet For Diverticulitis

My dad made it to the bathroom when he was overcome with weakness nearly passed out collapsed to the floor slurred his speech and thought he was about to die. In a few minutes he came out of it for the most part and I helped him onto the toilet. A lot of blood came out. The ambulance took him to the hospital. They did a colonoscopy sp? and diagnosed Diverticulitus sp? We've googled the Gird Diet "as his doctor advised" and they all seem to contradict each other and is very confusing. Can you suggest a good easy to understand website that lists the foods he should and shouldn't eat, or send me a list and info about this because he wont see his doctor for a week?

Welcome to HealthcareMagic,
I am sorry you had this unfortunate experience . Perhaps I can help you understand the problem and how to deal with it.

First, the Gerd diet was the wrong prescription. When diverticulitis flares up, it means the pockets that have formed in the bowel (diverticulosis) have become infected. The treatment is antibiotics and a Low Residue diet. This diet is similar to a low fiber diet plus milk and lactose restriction.

When the ..itis (diverticulitis) has cleared to prevent reoccurring episodes, gradually increase fiber to 25 grams (avoiding nuts, seeds, corn) and some surgeons say peas also, as they may become trapped in pockets. As fiber is gradually increased, assure that enough water is taken daily or 8 eight ounce glasses of pure water a day. A gradual increase in fiber will help avoid gas, distension, bloating that may occur with a rapid increase.

Hope this is of help to you.
