Suggest Diet Plan For Diabetic Patient

I need an idea of ideal diet for Diabetes II. Walking is so painful (will eventually need hip replacement). I am going to try chair dancing. Walking makes me have severe muscle spasms. My husband is also overweight in belly fat, just started to get the gout. Would it be advisable for him to get a blood test for diabetes II? I think the conditions are linked.
