Smoking is bad for heart health. Persuade him to give up smoking. An occasional drink is fine as long as he doesn't drink beyond the permissible limits that is not more than 2 drinks in a day. Encourage him to stay physically active and brisk walk for 30 minutes a day atleast 5 times a week to lower cholesterol levels.

He needs to have a healthy low fat, high fibre diet which includes low fat milk/curd and cheese, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as raw salads without oily dressings. Avoid mayonnaise, and fat rich salad dressings, pasta sauces with cream and fat.

Prefer whole wheat pasta and whole grain bread over pasta and bread made from refined flour. If at all you use refined flour pasta, add lots of vegetables to the dish and cook with less fats/oils. Prefer olive oil, canola oil and rice bran oil and avoid butter, clarified butter and milk cream, margarine etc.

Limit fat intake by using not more than 3-4 tsp of oil per person in a day for cooking.

Avoid fatty foods, deep fried foods, bakery items like pastries, cakes, cookies which have alot of fat and sugar.

If non-vegetarian choose lean cuts of meat, chicken, fish and eggwhite. Avoid using minced meat, beef, eggyolk which are rich in cholesterol.

Choose healthier cooking methods which require less fat like simmering, boiling, stewing, steaming, stir frying etc.

Start with these changes slowly one by one and encourage him to eat healthy and stay active.
