Suggest Dosage Of Benadryl For Hives Itching

I m taking Benadryl for hives itching. What is the maximum dose in a 24 hour period? The box says no more than 6-25 mg in 24 hours but taking 2 at a time, 50 mg, only eases the itching for 4 hours. Is it safe to take 2 every four hours which would be a total of 200 mg in 24 hours?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history you are having urticaria, my treatment advice is -
1. Avoid fast food and food with artificial colors for 2 months.
2. Don't take any medication without consulting a doctor as it may worsen the condition.
3. It is safe to take benadryl 4 times a day. But it is advisable to take other non-sedative and potent antihistamine like levocetrizine twice daily for 7-10 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral hydroxyzine, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
Dr. Harshit bhachech.
