Suggest Exercise And Healthy Diet To Control Cholesterol And BP Level

My total cholesterol is 242. My LDL is 172. HDL is 54, triglycerides at 81. I am 5 11 and weigh 235. I am trying to excercise 3-5 times a week and begin to eat a more heart healthy diet. My blood pressure is also borderline high as of late. I am 42. My doc wants to start me on low doses of BP and Cholesterol meds. Should I or should I really work on exercsing more and eating better? I don t want to be on meds if I can avoid it!

Hello,

You can try with diet changes and exercise strategies initially for 1 month. If you don't find any change in weight and cholesterol levels, then you can start medications. For now you can start cholesterol reducing medications.

The following are my recommendations:
1) Avoid fatty foods
2) Include nuts and dry fruits like almonds and walnuts in your diet.
3) Very low intake of carbohydrates
4) Moderate amounts of proteins
5) High amounts of fiber in diet.
6) Include fresh green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet
7) Take tab. Rosuvastatin 10mg once daily to reduce cholesterol levels.
8) Daily physical exercise for 45min/ day for atleast 5 days a week is recommended.
9)Avoid prolonged sitting.
10) Walk more than usual.
11) Quit sedentary lifestyle.
12) You can also practice intermittent fasting regimen like fasting for 18 hours and then eat for 6 hrs. But this should be under supervision of a dietician.

Please repeat cholesterol values and check weight after 1 month. If there is improvement, you can continue the same.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
