Suggest Home Remedy For Itchy Ear With Hair Strands

I went to the doctor last night to have my ear checked. For the past month it has felt extremely itchy and felt like something was in there. The doctor checked it and she said there was a hair in there. She took it out with tweezers and i felt it tug a bit inside as the hair let go. It was a strand from using qtips in my ear. My ear is still feeling itchy today and I am wondering if there may be still more strands in there. If there is, is there anything I can try at home to get it out, without having to go back to the doctor again. This is driving me nuts.

Hi,

Noted your history about hair in ear canal due to using q-tip which the Doctor removed but you still have the itching and feeling of more hair in ear.
Such a history is indicative of one of the following:
Itching can be due to dry ear canal skin or some sort of dermatitis as seen in many patients.
Eustachian tube dysfunction can cause the same feeling.
I would advise you the following in such a case:
Apply wax dissolving ear drops with olive oil to q-tip and slowly rotate into the ear canal. This will remove the hair, the dry skin or anything that is causing irritation.
The oil applied will reduce the itching.
You may take an anti-histamine to reduce this feeling.
Take nasal steam inhalation if there is nasal blockage or so. You can instill nasal drops to keep the Eustachian tube open.
Consult an ENT Surgeon for further clinical evaluation, examination and management as per the cause found.
If there is any skin disease then consult a Dermatologist too for second opinion and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
