Suggest Home Remedy For Stabbing Pain In Upper Abdomen

My 17 year old son is experiencing upper abdominal pains for the past couple days. He describes the pain as stabbing. His bowel movements are regular, no nausea or diarrhea. He did have some intestinal gas and cramping on Friday. He has taken Advil with little relief. Any other home remedies we can try?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Stabbing pain in the upper abdomen is commonly due to indigestion, food allergy, side effects of certain medications taken, constipation, gastritis, acid reflux, etc. To get relief he can take antacids and PPIs, one SOS when needed. He can take Spasmol (spasmoproxyvon), one SOS for relief if required. He should take fiber rich food for better bowel movement and take plenty of water.

However, such symptom may be indicative of UTI, acute pancreatitis, liver problems, enlarged spleen, etc. You are suggested to get him clinically examined in ER, get urinalysis (R/E and C/S), Stool examination, blood and imaging tests done if required to detect pathology causing discomfort. This is to stay on the safer side.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
