Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mom 82 yrs old, had Atrial septal defect (ASD), 7 months ago got Arrhythmia(irregular heartbeat) went hospital imergency room, then take Rythmol 300-450mg/day, now she is very weak and has anxiety, and also the dr recommended take Bisoprolol, we are not sure wich one is better for her, if Rythmol can take constantly, she is also take eliquis ,bucause this cause her blood pressue going high(150/90)
Dear Sir Thanks for your query to us. 1. These medications are not meant for ASD. They are possibly for one of the complications of long standing ASD i.e. atrial fibrillation. 2. Eliquis is not for high blood pressure but it is a blood thinner to prevent clot formation in heart due to AF. 3. The choice between Rhythmol (propafenone) for rhythm control and bisoprolol for rate control in AF is controversial and is debatable. I would prefer rate control strategy in my old patients who have anatomical reasons for AF like ASD or Mitral valve disease. Do consult a good cardiologist before making your choice. Sincerely Sukhvinder
