Suggest Medication For Cold And Cough In Children

I have a ten year old who has a head cold and cough keeps him up at night. We live 60 miles from the closest store to get medicine, so have to make due with what we have. I am wondering what would be suitable to give him. We have tried honey on a spoon, and Vicks on feet but runny nose and sore throat from drainage are needing something more. He weighs over 100 pounds and is 5 ft tall. Born July, 2004

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that he has an upper respiratory tract infection leading to the symptoms of sore throat and cough with runny nose..
I would suggest you to give him steam inhalations and saline nasal irrigations..
Make him do warm saline gargles..
Give him tylenol or Ibuprofen to relieve pain and discomfort..
Do warm compresses around the nostrils..
Sucking throat lozenges or drinking honey and lemon tea can help..
Ginger juice with honey in a tea spoon can also be relieving..
Make him sleep with head slightly raised as compared to feet to ease the drainage...

Once you can each the pharmacy you can give him decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, mucolytics like Ambroxol, anti histamines like Levocetrizine and cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin..

In case of no improvement consult a General Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
