Suggest Medication For Jock Itch

Hi I ve been suffering with jock itch / very itchy scrotum and anus for a number of years now. I have seen my doctor and been given oral medication as well as creams such as travocort and daktocort. The creams work well but as soon as I stop using them the itching comes back a number of days later. It tends to get worse at night time. The skin can be very dry and cracked but can also get quite moist at times when scratched. It is making my life very difficult. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Jock itch is tinea cruris or fungal infection of the inner thighs and buttocks area. It can be treated by taking four to six weeks of anti fungal treatment which includes tablets along with creams.

Do not use soap over that area. Mistreatment with over the counter Steroid containing creams like fourderm, panderm, quadriderm, hh zole, candid b etc lead to repeated case of recurrence and also side effects due to application.

Do not use steroid containing combination creams. You can write back to us in your symptoms persist or you can see a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
