Suggest Medication To Terminate Pregnancy

I am Abhineeta, 23 years old, married. My weight is 47kgs. I am medically normal with no health complaints. I did a urine strip test on 38th day of my period, which tested positive. But, however, my husband and me are not ready for a child as of now. So kindly suggest me medications to terminate the pregnancy.

Hallow Abhineeta,

You are just above 38 days pregnant; i.e. less than 7 weeks pregnant. You may opt for Medical Termination of pregnancy by use of Mifepristone + Misoprostol. These medicines are very effective and safe in terminating the pregnancy up to 9 weeks of gestation (WHO recommendations); however in India, it is legal only up to 7 weeks of gestation.

Before going for these medicines, please understand following legal and scientific facts:

1. These medicines are not over the counter medicines. They have to be obtained only by Obstetrician's advice and prescription.
2. These medicines should be taken in prescribed doses lest the risk of failure or incomplete abortion leading to excessive bleeding.
3. These medicines are known to cause abnormalities in the baby. Hence in case of failure of these medicines, the decision should not be reverted to continuation of pregnancy. The pregnancy then should be terminated by some surgical procedures like MVA or so.
4. Usually after last dose of Misoprostol, abortion starts within 3 days after the last dose of Misoprostol. It is advisable to confirm the completeness of abortion by ultrasonography if in doubt.
5. A follow up visit to Obstetrician 7 days after the last dose of Misoprostol is advocated.

There are still few days for completion of 7 weeks. So please hurry up to the Obstetrician.

I hope this helps you today.
