Suggest Medications For Bladder Infection

Hi, I am in Phoenix for the winter and I have come down with a bladder infection. I have no doctor here and so I am treating myself. I have taken over the counter AZO standard for the pain and I have some avelox from another time I had this infection. The pills are about 5 years old, will that matter? It always helped before.

Hello

You are suffering from bladder infection, you are suggested to take adequate amount of water and fluids to flush out toxicity. Get a urinalysis (R/E and C/S) done so that you will be treated with specific antibiotics that will work best. Take care of your hygiene, avoid using public washrooms and toilets. Stay away from sex or any other sexual activity for a couple of days.

You are advised not to take medicines that are too old as they commonly get expired. They will do more harm to you than good. To treat bladder infections, commonly a course of antibiotics like Fosfomycin or Nitrofurantoin is given. If you are not allergic to sulpha drugs then you can also take a course of Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole. Quinolones can be given for simple UTI infections but they are reserved for more serious infections as they can cause disabling side effects affecting the nerves- CNS, tendons, muscles, joints, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
