Suggest Methods For A Safe Removal Of The Tampon

Hi, my 13 year old daughter tried using a tampon for the first time. It is one of the lite tampons. When trying to remove it she has a band of skin across the tampon. I am assuming that this is the hyman. This is making it painful to remove the tampon. How should we remove it? Is it ok to try to slide the skin to the side to remove it?
