Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 58, 5-8, 245 lbs, no medications. I walk on a treadmill 10-20 minutes daily, then either swim a quarter mile or do weights in a YMCA program. I have a demanding job creating content for a large international website. After work, I usually kayak a mile or swim in Chesapeake Bay. However, my blood pressure is hovering around 162/84. What should I do?
There are different factors that play a role in causing hypertension.
Though exercise and a healthy diet are very important in helping control blood pressure, it is important to remember that there is a familial or inherited factor. Blood pressure rises with age.
In most persons, no cause for the hypertension can be found.
Because the readings that are are quoting are stage 2 hypertension which is the higher stage, you need to see your doctor for evaluation. Medication is needed to control the readings.
You would still continue your healthy lifestyle but it is important to get medication on board because the longer the readings remain high, you are at risk of heart disease and stroke.
I hope this helps
