Suggest Mood Stabilizers To Manage Borderline Personality Disorder

I m wondering which Neuromodulators/mood stabilizers: Valproic Acid-Depakote, Carbamazephine-Tegretol, Gabapentin . Oxcarbazepine (Triepal), or possibly Lamotrigine is safest & works best for treating BPD agitation, aggression/anger outbursts? (Client experienced episodes of pathological gambling 9-10 years ago.) He is currently a Military Recruiter, who is not allowed to take certain medications.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

To reduce aggression and anger out bursts all mood stabilizers you've mentioned can be used. The choice depends upon patient factors and liking of the treating doctor. Depakote is commonly used to control aggression and to stabilize the mood. The drug doesn't cause much sedation and is not habit forming. I don't think its contraindicated in military jobs (though this should be confirmed).Other option to control the aggression is use of Lithium Carbonate. The drug is also safe to use and has great efficacy in aggression.

Hope I have answered your query.
