Suggest Non Steroidal Treatment For Temporal Arthritis

Is there a non-steroidal treatment for temporal arteritis? I have been on Prednisone since Dec 2014 - highest dose 60 mg qd - decreasing to current dose of 5 mg qod. The side effects of altered taste changes, night sweats, dry cough & throat clearing, and excessive bruising have made my quality of life greatly reduced. I would like to be off Prednisone if possible. Thank you. John D.

Thanks for consulting me at HCM. I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to latest medical practice guidelines.

Temporal arteritis patients who are resistant cases and on long term Corticosteroids, I usually recommend them to go for some other agents too for better outcome. No doubt steroids are needed from the very start of treatment otherwise irreversible damages can debilitate the patients in many ways.

So, to avoid strokes and visual losses low dose Aspirin is recommended. Added are the benefits of Methotrexate that I usually recommend. It has effective benefits in controlling the pain, stiffness and inflammation. You may ask your treating physician for addition of these agents to your therapy.
