Suggest Non-sulfa Medication For Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infection

Hi!! My situation is such that I am allergic to sulfa medications to treat UTI s. In the past I had been prescribed KEFLEX, 250mg, 1 capsule 3 times a day for 14 days OR MACROBID, 100mg, 1 tablet 2 times a day for 14 days. Needless to say, I usually have to extend my dosing of either medications another 5 to 7 days to return to proper body functioning. I also supplement my diet with plenty of 100% cranberry juice and occasional dosing of AZO to help ease the symptoms of the UTI. Are there any other antibiotics that can be safely prescribed for me that would restore my health better than the ones previously mentioned? Thank you for your time and consideration.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

So ideally, the treatment of UTI should be based on urine culture and sensitivity report.

Depending upon the report, various other drugs like levofloxacin, nitrofurantoin, amoxy-clav, cefpodoxime, can be given All these drugs are non sulfa drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Loveleen Sharma, General & Family Physician
