General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Over the counter medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and herbal formulations like hibiscus, chamomile, kava, and lavender can be beneficial in terms of having calming effects.

The risk of dependence and withdrawal is less as with restyl, they may aid sleep and relaxation and useful for short-term episodes of anxiety.

However, they may cause drowsiness during the day, not effective for severe anxiety, and hence not approved by US FDA for treating anxiety. Benadryl may also cause dry mouth, increased heart beats, constipation and urinary retention on long run.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
