Suggest Pain Medication That Can Be Taken While On Metformin And Nexium

I am having extensive periodontal surgery tomorrow-2 bone grafts and osseous surgery on several teeth. I am 75 years old, and have never taken a pain killer. I do not like drugs. I have HBP under excellent control with Lisinopril, 10 mg. 1x/day. I also have diabetes type 2 under excellent control with Metformin, 500 mg. 2x/day. A1-C is 6. I also take Nexium. What pain medication would you recommend that has the least side effects. Thank you!

Hello,

Your surgery for sure will need the pain killer. I' m sure that the doctor will prescribe you, pain killer, anyway, I am giving you some more information and you can choose together. Pain killers are divided into three groups depending on how potent ( how they can tranquilize the pain:
- Mild to moderate pain: like acetaminophen ( which depending on your situation on high blood pressure I would suggest, but I don't know about how can it manage well the pain, Ibuprofen ( the usual side effect in a patient with HBP is increasing a bit the blood pressure)
- Moderate pain: like Diclofenac the same side effect like Ibuprofen and also they can cause some gastric problems
There are also some of the opium class which can use in strong pain like tramadol or hydrocodone. But as I said in the begin it depends on your gravity of pain. If acetaminophen will dominate your pain, stay there.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Eniola Memishahi
