Suggest Parenting Tips To Help Understand Cultural Change In Immigrant Child

Should a young child who has one parent who is American and one who is Russian (and the child isn t saying words yet at 19 months) be listening to Russian cartoons on a regular basis instead of American as his mother wants him to learn The Russian language? Mighty that be confusing him? They live in the United States and he will be attending American schools. Shouldn t they focus on the American language first if the child appears to be struggling with his speech?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

At his age, surrounded by persons who would speak english, he will pick up english quite well.
He is likely to become fluent in both especially english since he would be hearing this more often wheras he would be only hearing russian at home.

The brain of young children is very malleable and able to pick up languages easily.
He should be fine.

The exposure at an early age to another language is actually the best time to learn.

I hope this helps
