Suggest Precaution For A Dislocated Shoulder

Hi, i have encountered shoulder dislocation for the first time due to an 2 wheeler (bike) accident and doc has strapped my hand with a zinc stick cloth & adviced to keep it for 3 weeks, is this compulsory or it can be removed in 18/19 days ? What are the precautions to be taken so that it doesn't occur again ?
