Suggest Precautions To Be Taken Post Bleach Exposure To An Infant

My 9 month old was playing with a spray bottle with bleach. Some may have gotten in contact with his mouth. I immediately undressed him and put him in the bath, washed him thoroughly. What other precautions do I need to take to make sure that he doesn t have any reaction or poisoning?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query your child has accidental exposure to bleach fumes which is a situation you need not to worry much as if it is symptom less as bleach contains chlorine gas which is not harmful and is antimicrobial in action. I would suggest you not to give your child milk or water for few hours as this will make difficulty in swallowing for child. If the chemical is on the skin or in the eyes, flush with lots of water for at least 15 minutes. Visit physician immediately to seek medical help if symptoms of nausea and vomiting will be there. Doctor may give humidified oxygen and bronchodilators. Try to roam in fresh air with child as it will give clearance to airways.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
