Suggest Procedure To Remove Keloid

I have keloid on my chest and my mom also have it on her arm and jaw. I m scared to operate on it because my mom s grew larger after surgery. Her jaw was grafted but was infected since. With some literatures that I read, I do not feel confident in removing the keloid in any proceedure. What is your advice?

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic.

Keloid is due to excessive formation of scar as part of the wound healing process. They are raised above the surface unlike normal scaring which is flat/level with the skin.
Keloids are usually itchy and may extend beyond the actual wound margins with finger like projections.
The tendency to form keloids is inherited.
Keloids are best managed with intralesional steroids e.g intralesional triamcinolone acetonide, which is a depot injection.
The injection causes breakdown of the excessive collagen tissue present in keloidal scar, thereby causing them to flatten. The injection might be repeated after 3 weeks if required.
Other options are CO 2 Laser vaporization; 5-Florouracil (5-FU) Infection.
Surgery is an option but of course there is a chance of recurrence.
Symptoms such as itching and pain reduce considerably as the keloid begins to flattens.
You may visit a dermatologist for more details and appropriate treatment.

Regards
