Suggest Remedies For A Senegal Parrot Bite On Left Foot Of An Infant

My Senegal bit the toe of the left foot of my 1 yeard, 3 mos. old cockatiel. I t was bleeding; the cockatiel, was anxious...but, I managed to put a drop of ophthalmic bacitracin on a q-tip, and dab it on the wound. I had no steptic powder or stick. It is after 1:30AM... I just read that some flour would stop blood if it starts bleeding again. The Cockatiel is alert, caliming down, and has eaten something within the last 1/2 hour. I ve put him in his cage because he kept calling the sennie when I PUT HIM in a travel cage. Is there more I can do now, or can I get to sleep myself...I ve also prayed to St. Francis. [sometimes, you do what you can, and leave the rest to God. Joan

Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

The entire question is whether it gets infected. Parrots can have some odd diseases but they either produce obvious fever and sickness or there isn't an infection. The more serious ones are local skin germs that can produce serious infection. And there is at least a consideration of tetanus so a tetanus shot is probably a consideration although the immunity of the mom including through breastfeeding is quite a likely protective. More so if the mom was immunized within 5 years of birth.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
