Hi,
Extraesophageal syndromes which can be associated with an established GERD (
gastroesophageal reflux disease) include chronic pharyngitis/a
sore throat & dental erosions (which you are suffering from) due to regurgitation with direct contact between the refluxate (acidic) and supraesophageal structures (oropharynx, tongue, teeth etc).
Management is essential with inhibitors of
gastric acid secretion (Proton pump inhibitors/PPIs like
pantoprazole are more efficacious).
Antacids can be combined with prokinetic drugs like
domperidone sustained release etc in management of GERD.
Lifestyle modifications are also routinely advised.
Avoid foods that reduce LES (lower esophagal sphincter) pressure, making them “refluxogenic” (these commonly include fatty foods, alcohol, spearmint, peppermint, tomato-based foods, and possibly coffee and tea).
Avoid acidic foods, that are inherently irritating. Adopt behaviors to minimize acid reflux (elevation of the head of the bed and avoidance of eating before retiring, sleep with loose clothing avoiding under pressure on the abdomen).
Lastly, reduce body weight, if you are overweight or obese by regular exercise (aerobic preferably).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
