Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband thinks he has bugs growing around his toenail. He had an ingrown toenail that a podiatrist cut and the toenail fell off a few years ago and regrew. The problem is it grew back really thick and is hard to cut. It is getting long and he needs to have it professionally but but now he said there are small bugs around it. Is this possible? Thanks
As per your complain, an ingrown toenail is a condition in which there is an overgrowth of the toenails edges towards the soft skin inwards leading to inflammation and severe pain and swelling in the area.
It is generally seen in individuals with bigger toenails as well as it can also occur if you wear tight shoes or you do not trim the nails properly.
You might be advised creams with a combination of medications like antibiotic and antifungal creams along with steroid cream to relieve pain and swelling.
Bugs can appear due to infection or rotting of the area and needs immediate attention.
Proper debridement of the area and antiseptic treatment has to be done in case of infection.
For avoiding recurrence of inward growing of toenails he should soak your feet in warm water and when the nail and skin become soft gently raise the nail at the corners outwards and trim gently. It will prevent the nail from growing inwards. You can also wear proper fitting shoes. Trim your nails as soon as they grow sufficiently and do not let them grow very long. You can also soak your feet in Epson salt solution. At times in cases in which the medical or conservative treatment fails you can be advised to go for a surgical treatment like a matrixectomy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
