Suggest Remedies For Bulging Vein In Ankle With Extreme Pain Post An Injury

Yesterday I hit the outside of my ankle on the corner of a cabinet. I did not hit it very hard, but there was a very sharp pain that lasted for maybe a good 30 seconds or more. I also noticed a bulging vein on my ankle where the injury occurred. Later in the evening my ankle was swollen and painful to the touch and is still swollen today ( although the vein is not as prominent). What could cause this? I really didn t hit it with much force, but the immediate pain and subsequent swelling seem way out of proportion.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The protruding vein is likely to be due to inflammation or injury. It is not suggestive of deep vein thrombosis. A ligament sprain is likely. It is best to decrease the weight bearing and keep the foot elevated.
Do use a crepe bandage or elastic brace to wrap the ankle for support. It is not a serious issue. Please do not worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
