Hallow Mumma,

I can empathize your feelings of frustration due to resistant anaemia in spite of iron treatment.

Get your blood examined by an haematologist. Peripheral blood smear will throw a light on the type of anaemia. May be you might have to supplement with some other medicine. As it is you should take sufficient Folic acid (which is required to increase haemoglobin in the body) during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the anaemia worsens because firstly there is increased requirement of iron for the baby also, and secondly the blood volume increases during pregnancy - more fluid part than the cells.

Haemoglobin is formed by two components : Haem and Globin. Haem is formed by iron and Globin from the proteins. If you supplement enough iron having protein deficient diet, your haemoglobin cannot improve. Hence along with the iron, have protein rich diet also. Pulses, legumes, nuts, meat, fish, egg provide you enough proteins.

Invariably, we have noticed worm infestation in anaemic patients, particularly in developing part of the world. These worms suck the blood from the intestines and the anaemia does not respond to iron treatment. Please have some anti-worm tablets with the help of Obstetrician only. Please do not take these medicines without Obstetrician's advice as some of them are known to harm the foetus in the womb.

I am sure if you follow this ordeal, your haemoglobin can be improved, You have to take active and scientific steps to improve the haemoglobin and iron storage in your body, otherwise, there is a risk for the baby of intrauterine growth retardation, low iron storage, susceptibility to infections and other diseases after birth.

It is very good that you have taken this issue seriously. Now please carry on with Obstetrician to get the problem sorted out.

Wish you an uneventful pregnancy and bony baby to breastfeed later.
