Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
we have had a mild but consistent cough for a couple of months and no cough suppressant works... we fell fine except for the cough but it will not leave...what should we do...note many of the people we know have the same thing...again, what should we do... thank you
Persistent cough is a matter of concern and it needs to be evaluated in detail to find out underlying cause for it. Since cough suppressant is not working, I would advise you for a battery of investigation to rule out Infection or heart or lung disease.
So I would advise you for X ray Chest, CBC, ESR and sputum microscopy to rule out Infection like bronchitis, tuberculosis and so on.Persistent cough affecting large number of persons might be related to viral infection or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract or chronic allergy.
I would advise you to take steam inhalation and warm saline gargling.you should do deep breathing exercises. You should search for any allergen in the environment and try to avoid it. You can take honey with few drops of ginger juice for symptomatic relief which will help by soothing the throat.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask for follow up question I will be happy to help you.
Best wishes, Dr. BR Hudda
