Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been married for 30 years. I occasionally get cold sores. maybe once a year. My wife of 30 years just had had an outbreak of HSV 1 and after going to the doctor, finding out she out that she has it. She has never had an outbreak before, and the doctor makes it sound like she just contracted it. How possible is it to be married for that length of time and just now contract it? We have always had a strong sex life including oral sex.
It is possible to be infected with HSV 1 for a long time without having an outbreak, so I also would suspect that she has had it for a long time without knowing it, and only now is having an outbreak.
I am not sure why the doctor would think she just contracted it, unless a blood test was done looking for antibodies and it was negative, in which case this would suggest she was just recently infected.
If this test was not done, it might help to check it in order to clarify whether she was recently infected or not.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
