Suggest Remedies For Pain And Infection Post Removal Of Ingrown Toenail
i recently had an ingrown toenail; i saw a Podiatrist who pared it down and removed the ingrowth, but now it hurts and I believe it may be infected. I am soaking it and applying Neosporin. What else can I do? It only hurts a lot when I wear my shoes.
According your symptoms I think you have ( in medical terms) an "Onychocryptosis" or "Unguis Incarnatus". An ingrown toenail develops when one or both of the curved side edges of the nail are pushed into the surrounding skin. As the pressure increases, the nail pierces through the skin causing pain, inflammation, tenderness and redness.
First you should try home treatment with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, soak the foot in warm water four times a day and wash the foot, including the affected area, twice a day with soap and water, keep the foot clean and dry during the rest of the day. If there is no improvement after three days of home care it may become infected, and if this happens you should continued to use local antibiotics and to meet a surgical doctor.
I hope my answer help you. Let me know if I can assist you further. I wish you quick recovery.
Regards, Dr. Monika Dede
