Suggest Remedies For Pain And Swelling In Back Post An Injury

Hi, my daughter (12) fell hard onto her bottom whilst roller skating. She is now finding it very painful to walk and sit down, she also has a little swelling at the bottom of her back. I have given pain medicine, should I get it looked at or what else can I do ? Thanks Dawn

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Dawn,

It does not sound like a fall from adequate height to have caused serious injury to her back. What is possible, though, is that she might have fractured her tailbone, which is right at the end of the spine at the cleft of her buttock. You could go in for an X-ray to confirm this, but it is not usually necessary because it does not change the management, which is basically pain relief and rest.

Give her pain medication of the anti-inflammatory type like ibuprofen, and try to fashion a donut shaped pillow for her to sit on so that she can avoid pressure on the sore part. Icing would help to reduce the swelling too.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
