Suggest Remedies For Persistent Diarrhea In A Child

Hi, My son, age 3 has had diarrhea for 5 days so far. This afternoon, his preschool teacher noticed blood in his stool. My doctor advised me to bring him in for a stool culture, which i have done. i was told that it may be shegella and he can be contagious. they will not get the results back for another 3-5 days. what is the likelihood of it being shegella and how is he contagious (through the air or bodily fluids)? Is there anything else that it could be?
