Suggest Remedies For Persistent Lower Back Pain

My sister takes opioids for back pain. Her doctor gave her a low dose of methadone. Since then her husband finds her falling off the bed and combative. When I talk to her she sounds drunk. I am afraid for her. Should she stop taking the methadone? She also takes Xanax.

Hi,

Noted the history about your sister having pain in low back and takes opioid, her Doctor added a low dose of Methadone after which she is falling off and her voice has turned as if drunken.
Since she is already on opium products addition of low dose Methadone has increased the symptoms as you have explained as Methadone is opioid only hence should be stopped and ask her to consult her Doctor again.
Since there is low back pain then obviously it should be well diagnosed and then treated as per the cause found on clinical evaluation, examination and MRI of the affected area.
Ask her to use supportive back support in the form of belt.
Not to bend and do any activity that increases the low back pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
