Suggest Remedies For Phantosmia Of Cigarette Smoke Smell

I am smelling cigarette smoke constantly when no one around me is smoking. I have been very stressed about my 20 year old sons recent spine surgery. When I go to bed at night it is the strongest, I have never smoked and no one smokes in our home. Thank you, Lori

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the symptoms of strange smell through nose and in your case as you are smelling cigarette smoke that others cannot experience and no history of bad breath seems consistent with a condition known as Phantosmia..
It can occur due to a number of conditions like nasal infection and polyps, migranes, Oral and dental infection, smoking habit, condition related to Nervous System like Parkinsonism, Alzimer's Disease, Stroke, head injury etc..
I will suggest you to consult a Medicine Specialist or a Neurologist and get evaluated and along with clinical evaluation investigations like Nasal endoscopy, MRI, CT Scan etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..
As of now you can do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation with few drops of Eucalyptus oil in water, chew flavoured sugar free chewing gum and limit intake of high aroma foods like onion and garlic..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of phantosmia of cigarette smoke smell which is due to olfactory hallucination. It occurs due to disturbance in olfactory sensations and it could be due to infection of nasal sinus as well.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with single tablet of Desvenlafaxine per day and your symptoms will resolve in 2-3 months.

You should take steam inhalation and do saline nasal rinses. You should avoid intake of any kind of sea food. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor will take history or may order CT scan and nasal endoscopy.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
