Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband had severe lower left pain which seems to be a muscle cramp down his shin. It was very intense and the pain was very high. it has lowered now. he is not dehydrated but did work most of day on his feet and he is a diabetic. at the worse part of it, he could barely walk. he is better now but is this something we should get checked now, or things to watch for that could be something else?
Muscle cramps can be due different possible causes such as : (1) electrolyte disturbance. Most commonly sodium but can also be due to abnormal potassium and calcium levels as well
(2)trauma to the muscles or nerves in the area
(3)infection
(4)side effect of medication
(5) poor circulation- it is likely that his circulation would be assessed by his doctor when he goes for a visit so he should know if this is a problem
At this stage, if this only occurred once, then he can consider monitoring to see if it was a one off event but if it recurs, he may need to be assessed by his doctor. This would include examination and blood tests.
I hope this helps
