Suggest Remedies For Sore Throat And Dark Phlegm

I am a 22 year old male; fairly healthy with no smoking history. I woke up this morning with pain in my lower throat and great difficulty swallowing. I m coughing up dark phlegm and also have severe upper chest congestion. If I am allergic to penicillin, will there be any other antibiotics an urgent care doctor could prescribe? I d hate to waste a visit. Thank you for your help, Doctor!

Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to bronchitis which is an inflammation of the bronchial lining. I suggest to use anti inflammatory medications such as Tylenol to lower the inflammation.

I also suggest to drink liquids and rest. You may also need antibiotics. I recommend to use Amoxicillin 500 mg twice a day for a week. This is a prescription medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
