My wife has thick yellow phlegm and throat irritation after coming into contact with mold on some of her things in basement.. Instead of discarding she attempted to salvage by cleaning for as long as she could bear.. Shes now self medicating with penicillin .. Also she has asthma ..

As per your query your wife has thick yellow phlegm and throat irritation . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like allergic reaction , upper respiratory track infection , acid reflux or post nasal drip . Penicillin is prescribed medicine ,so your should take it only when prescribed . I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles several times a day , take anti histamine like benadryl and drink plenty of water . If condition doesn't get improve or get worse then consult ENT specialist for proper evaluation of the condition . Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test and blood test . Doctor may prescribe antibacterial , anti viral , anti allergic or decongestant . Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist .
