General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There is a connecting track (known as Eustachian tube) between the nasopharynx & middle ear through which there is equalization of pressure.

Any obstruction to this Eustachian tube, secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cold & congestion, can lead to stuffiness/ blocking sensation by causing un-equalisation of pressure between the nasopharynx & middle ear.

The symptoms get more pronounced during descent in an aeroplane, as mentioned in your post.

Clinical examination is important for diagnosis, so I will advise you to consult your Doctor/ ENT specialist for a proper clinical examination.

Eustachian tube function tests would be helpful to detect any pathological cause for your symptoms. There is no need to worry, you will be fine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Polash Sannigrahi, General & Family Physician
