Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Acne are quite common at your age. Moreover, acne is chronic and can last for years and even decades.
During a flare up of acne, I usually suggest my patients to use a topical antibacterial e.g
benzoyl peroxide gel during day time, as a spot treatment for active acne.
At night, I usually ask my patients to use a topical retinoid e.g
adapalene gel, over the whole affected area, once daily at night.
Retinoids are comedolytic and antiinflammatory and are useful in all grades of acne. Retinoids also help lighten the marks resulting from acne.
I suggest you to visit a
dermatologist in your region. Your dermatologist will assess the severity of your acne and advice accordingly.
Your dermatologist may also start you on
oral antibiotics if your acne is inflammatory i.e red, painful, pustular.
Maintenance treatment is an important component of overall treatment of acne wherein a topical retinoid e.g adapalene or
tretinoin is used by the patient even during remissions.
Retinoids being comedolytic prevent new acne formation and therefore are useful as maintenance treatment. As a maintenance regime retinoids may be used once every alternate days Or twice weekly rather than daily.
