Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the last year I have been very frustrated with my nails peeling off in layers. I have to keep them cut as short as possible and the top layer still peels off to about the middle of the nail bed. The upper 1/2 of the nail bed is slightly orange pink. I take biotin and a multivitamin, tons of vitamin D, calcium, fish oil, flaxseed oil...I also take tamoxophin (cancer hormone treatment drug). I eat healthy...low carbs, lots of veggies and protein. My blood tests for cancer screening are all normal and healthy. I have heard that nail issues can be a sign of other systemic issues.
As per my clinical experience, brittle finger nails may be in concern with various possibilities such as: - Recurrent or chronic fungal infection - Deficiency of carotene or others - Low levels of magnesium, zinc or else - Disorders of keratinisation - others
You should consult your primary care physician as first approach and get possible guidelines of management.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
