Suggest Remedy For Bruises On Foot

I dropped a box on the top of my foot about a week ago. It is bruised and today looks like it has reddened - like new bruising is happening. Is it possible to have broken a small bone? The box I dropped on it was a box of vinyl floor tiles - narrow end down - and probably weighed about 20 pounds. How should I care for it?
