Suggest Remedy For Chronic Cough

I have had a chronic cough for over five years and have seen my primary Dr for this many times with out success. I have gone to other Doctors for my cough and they have not been able to get rid of my cough. One Dr. I saw on 2-26-2009 seemed to help me the most. He prescribed an antibiotic ( zithromax and codeine oral syrup ) I mentioned this to my primary Dr. but he seems to be against using antibiotics unless he feels you really need them. I need to find a Dr. that can help me with this condition. I am 76 yrs old and have been in good health all of my life. I want to be able sleep at nite and go back to exercising, walking, golf etc. I hope you can help me.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Chronic cough is most likely due to: (1) post nasal drip- this is the most common cause. In some cases the drip may be silent and the person is not aware of it.

It is most common due to allergies. Treatment involves avoiding the source of the infection if possible, use of a topical steroid nasal sprays and oral antihistamines.

(2) GERD- gastroesophageal reflux disease- another common cause of cough.

In some persons with reflux , only the cough is present

(3)asthma

It is understandable not to prescribe antibiotics if no obvious infection is present because it increases the risk of becoming resistant to antibiotic therapy.

You may want to consider the use of the spray and oral antihistamine. It can take a few weeks for an effect to be seen.

If there is no effect then treatment for reflux may help
I hope this helps
