Suggest Remedy For Cough After Tonsils And Adenoid Removal

My daughter, who will be 6, had her tonsils and adenoids removed 4 days ago. She has developed a very croupy cough. It hurts her and she coughs alot. Also, she will hold her spit in her mouth and will not swallow it much. I called her doctor but he aint supposed to call me back till tomorrow sometime to let me know anything. Should i take her to the ER or just wait to see what her doctor says?

Hi,

It is common for children to experience a croupy cough after tonsil and adenoid removal surgery due to the swelling and inflammation in the throat. However, it is important to monitor your daughter's symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary.

You can try the following remedies to help relieve your daughter's cough:
- Encourage your daughter to drink plenty of fluids to keep her throat moist and help loosen mucus.
- Use a cool-mist humidifier in her room to help relieve dryness in the air and ease coughing.
- Give your daughter over-the-counter cough medicine recommended by her doctor. Avoid giving cough medicine to children under 4 years old without a doctor's advice.
- Use throat lozenges or throat sprays to help soothe her throat.
- Avoid exposing your daughter to irritants such as smoke, dust, and allergens that can aggravate her cough.

If your daughter's cough is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty breathing high fever, or chest pain, you should take her to the emergency room immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
